Install FiveM and join a server
To play on a FiveM server, install the FiveM client and a compatible, legitimately owned GTA V installation. You do not need to install FXServer, generate a server license key, or configure txAdmin just to join someone else’s server.
These instructions are for the Windows client. Hosting a server is a different task; use the txAdmin quick start for that.
Check the game edition before downloading resources
Confirm which GTA V edition the target server expects. Read Legacy versus Enhanced and the server’s own connection instructions. Compatibility and rollout requirements can change; do not assume that a guide mentioning only one edition remains universal.
Update the intended GTA V installation through the launcher you bought it from. Open the base game successfully before diagnosing FiveM. This gives you a useful baseline: a broken base-game installation is not a FiveM resource problem.
For current platform requirements, use the official system requirements rather than an old hardware checklist from a video.
Install the client
Download the installer from the FiveM website , not a re-upload, server pack, or third-party launcher. Run the downloaded executable. An empty installation folder lets you choose the location; otherwise the official installer normally uses %localappdata%\FiveM.
Complete the launcher’s prompts and point it to the correct game installation when requested. Start subsequent sessions from the installed FiveM shortcut rather than repeatedly running the downloaded installer.
If security software flags the official installer, verify its source and contact Cfx.re support . Do not permanently disable protection or download a replacement DLL from an unrelated site.
Join using the address supplied by the server
Use the server browser, the server’s join link, or the F8 console. For a development server running on your own computer, enter:
connect 127.0.0.1:30120That address means this computer. It will not connect to a friend’s machine or a rented server. For a remote server, use the exact address or join code supplied by its owner. Do not guess the port, publish private addresses, or forward router ports merely to join as a player.
A successful connection can include resource downloads and a server-specific approval or character-selection screen. An allowlist rejection is not proof that your client is broken. To leave a server from F8:
disconnectFind the next step from the symptom
| What you see | What to check next |
|---|---|
| Game executable not found | The game path and edition; verify that the base game launches |
| Localhost connection fails | Whether your own development server is running on that port |
| One server fails, another works | Ask the failing server’s staff about its resources, admission policy, and game edition |
| Every server fails | Gather the exact error and try the client diagnostics workflow |
| Waiting for approval or a clear allowlist refusal | Follow that server’s admission process; reinstalling does not grant access |
| Someone asks you for a server license key to play | You are following server-owner instructions, not normal client setup |
Keep the first complete error message and the approximate failure time. Changing many settings at once makes it harder to identify what actually helped. The official installation guide and client console reference are the primary references for the installer and connection commands.
Where to go next
Players should continue with client diagnostics. New server owners should use server setup, and developers can start with scripting. The answer finder separates those paths so you do not have to learn server administration just to play.
