Getting StartedGames & Client Prerequisites

Match the game edition to the client

FiveM needs an installed, updated, legitimate PC copy of GTA V. RedM needs Red Dead Redemption 2. Neither client supplies the commercial game, converts a console entitlement into a PC installation, or supports pirated copies. Match FiveM Legacy or Enhanced to the game edition and server you intend to use.

Game storefronts in the official manuals

The GTA V purchase reference  lists Steam , Epic Games , Rockstar , Amazon’s PC listing  and the Xbox Store’s PC Enhanced listing. This is source coverage, not a price comparison or a claim that every listing sells the same edition in every region. Check the platform, edition, seller and account requirements before purchase.

The RedM purchase reference  lists Steam , Epic Games  and Rockstar . Obtain the actual required PC game installation and update it through its launcher before debugging RedM.

Hardware figures and their limits

The following table preserves the Legacy-oriented figures from the pinned FiveM system-requirements page . It is not an Enhanced specification or a performance guarantee for heavily modified servers.

ComponentSource minimumSource recommended
CPUCore 2 Q6600 at 2.40 GHz or Phenom 9850 at 2.5 GHzCore i5-3470 at 3.2 GHz or AMD FX-8350 at 4 GHz
GPUGeForce 9800 GT 1 GB, Radeon HD 4870 1 GB or Intel HD GT2GeForce GTX 660 2 GB or Radeon HD 7870 2 GB
RAM8 GB; the source says 4 GB may work16 GB

The source also lists fully updated Windows 8.1/10/11 and an old recommendation to upgrade to Windows 10. Treat those as the historical page’s wording, not a current security-support recommendation or proof that Enhanced runs on those systems. Consult Rockstar’s current PC requirements  for the chosen edition and the actual client launcher requirements. Server downloads and cached assets can require substantially more disk space. Older AMD laptop GPU/CEF issues are documented in platform support.

Install, launch and uninstall

Download the client from the official project site, launch the legitimate game at least once, then install FiveM separately. An installer run inside an empty folder uses that folder; otherwise the documented default is %LocalAppData%\FiveM. Use the installed Start-menu shortcut afterward. For detailed steps, use client installation.

Before uninstalling, preserve settings, owned local resources and diagnostic evidence you still need. Use the installed uninstaller through appwiz.cpl, or remove only the verified custom FiveM installation. Deleting a desktop shortcut is not an uninstall; deleting the GTA installation is unnecessary.

Single-player saves and ASI plugins

The upstream client manual describes a customized single-player mode. Make a legitimate original-game save first and copy it to the FiveM profile under Documents\Rockstar Games\GTA V, identified by fivem_set.bin. Keep originals and backups separate. storymode and localGame are covered in the client-console reference.

For supported local plugins, the documented location is the plugins directory inside FiveM’s application data. A server may prohibit ASI/Script Hook plugins or enforce pure mode. Outdated or incompatible plugins can crash the client; they are not covered by ordinary platform support. Test only trusted plugins in a separate local setup, remove them before reproducing a clean-client failure, and never bypass a server’s restrictions.

Proceed to Legacy versus Enhanced, client configuration or RedM-compatible resource choices rather than assuming a GTA-specific script works in both games.
